Getting to Know Sana

Full Name: Sana Khan

What Other Organizationss are you involved in? EthisCrowd

Tell us something interesting about yourself: I grew up as a third culture kid. I was born in Islamabad, Pakistan, raised in Ad Dawha, Qatar, and spent a great majority of my summers in Muscat, Oman growing up. I moved to Calgary, Canada at the age of 7 and have lived here ever since.

Sana's Connection to Global Shapers

When did you join Global Shapers? April 2016

What interested in joining the shapers team? Shortly after graduating, I did a lot of travelling, partaking in internships and professional development programs abroad. I lived in New York, and also spent some time in China. The best part about living abroad is that you meet so many incredible people with a global outlook on life. When I came back to Calgary, I wanted to meet and stay connected with these 'type' of people. I most definitely found that when I joined the Calgary Hub.

What do you hope to achieve through your involvement in Global Shapers? One of the best things about the Global Shapers Community is the opportunity to build a global network. I had the opportunity to go to the Shape Asia 2016 Forum in Hong Kong in October, and I met the most incredible social entrepreneurs, activists, movers and shakers. I hope to attend more Shape events in the future and continue building my personal global network.

What are the current projects you are involved in, and why? I'm currently the Project Director for the Social Impact Research Group (SIRG). I started this group as a way to explore a personal passion of mine -which is exploring existing and emerging trends in the social impact investing space.

Sana & Calgary

What brought you to Calgary? My dad moved our family to Calgary from Qatar, when I was 7, for work purposes.

What do you appreciate most about our City? Kensington and Prince's Island Park.

Name one of the biggest issues facing Calgarians right now? The economy.

What issue are you working to tackle in our community, or what is next on your docket? There were two studies that came out last year, that I can't stop thinking about.

In a study done by the Canadian Payroll Association, half of Albertans are living pay check to pay check.  In another report released by the Canadian Government, Canadians' household debt climbed the highest amongst G7 countries just this past year.

I'm really interested in democratizing investment opportunities for low-income and average Canadians, and especially the underserved/marginalized within our communities. This was one of the reasons why I started the SIRG - as a way to research innovative practices in this space. This is also one of the reasons why I'm currently working with an investment crowdfunding start-up, that is currently piloting projects in this space.
